BILL NUMBER:S6083 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to research institutes on addiction PURPOSE: To provide statutory protection for the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions that are equivalent to other similar institutes and centers. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends Section 5200 of the education law to state that funds made available to the University at Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions be made available for the support of the institute in the amount appropriated and that funds shall not be appropriated or transferred for any other purpose. Section 2 is the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: By having statutory protections similar to those afforded to Cody Center would ensure that money allocated

GRISANTI, GALLIVAN -- read twice and ordered print- ed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Higher Educa- tion AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to research institutes on addiction THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 5200 of the education law, as added by section 1 of part E of chapter 405 of the laws of 1999, is amended to read as follows: S 5200. Establishment of the research institute on addictions. There is hereby established at the university center at Buffalo of the state university of New York the research institute on addictions for research and teaching in the sciences related to addiction, including alcohol abuse and substance abuse, as such terms are defined in section 1.03 of the mental hygiene law, and chemical dependence, as defined in section 19.40 of the mental hygiene law. FUNDS SHALL BE MADE AVAILABLE ANNUALLY FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE ON ADDICTIONS IN THE AMOUNTS APPROPRIATED FOR THIS PURPOSE AND SHALL NOT BE APPROPRIATED OR TRANS- FERRED FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE.
