AN  ACT directing the New York state continuing legal education board to
  adopt regulations permitting attorneys to  earn  continuing  education
  credits  for  uncompensated  legal  services to veterans and volunteer
  emergency responders

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The New York state continuing legal education board, estab-
lished  pursuant to 22 NYCRR 1500, is authorized and directed to promul-
gate regulations providing that an attorney may  earn  continuing  legal
education  credits  by  performing  uncompensated  legal services to any
veteran of the armed forces of the United States or any active volunteer
emergency responder, regardless of such veteran's or volunteer emergency
responder's income, in the same manner in which  an  attorney  may  earn
continuing  legal  education  credit for uncompensated legal services to
individuals unable to afford counsel pursuant to a program accredited by
the continuing legal education board under 22 NYCRR 1500.22(j). For  the
purposes  of  this  act,  the term "volunteer emergency responder" shall
mean an active member of a volunteer fire  company  and/or  a  voluntary
ambulance service as such terms are defined in section 100 of the gener-
al municipal law.
  S 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after
it shall have become a law.
