BILL NUMBER:S5769 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to authorizing the village of Port Jefferson, county of Suffolk to adopt any ordinance, rule or regulation affecting the stopping, standing or parking of motor vehicles along Main Street PURPOSE: To allow the village of Port Jefferson to regulate traffic on Main Street SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Provides that the village of Port Jefferson is authorized to adopt any ordinance, rule or regulation affecting the stopping, standing or parking of motor vehicles along that portion of state route twenty-five-A located in such village and constituting Main Street JUSTIFICATION: Main Street in the village Port Jefferson is a main thoroughfare of the historic seaport lined with many businesses, shops and points of interest. The village is a destination for many tourists and local guests. Traffic and parking have becoming problematic and the village is seeking to find innovative solutions to provide access to the downtown area. This bill would allow the village to achieve those goals by giving it the authority to regulate the flow of traffic in this often congested area. LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New Bill

LAVALLE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to authorizing the village of Port Jefferson, county of Suffolk to adopt any ordi- nance, rule or regulation affecting the stopping, standing or parking of motor vehicles along Main Street THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The opening paragraph of section 1684 of the vehicle and traffic law is designated subdivision 1 and a new subdivision 2 is added to read as follows: 2. NOTWITHSTANDING THE PROVISIONS OF SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION, THE VILLAGE OF PORT JEFFERSON, COUNTY OF SUFFOLK, IS AUTHORIZED TO ADOPT ANY ORDINANCE, RULE OR REGULATION AFFECTING THE STOPPING, STANDING OR PARKING OF MOTOR VEHICLES ALONG THAT PORTION OF STATE ROUTE TWENTY-FIVE-A LOCATED IN SUCH VILLAGE AND CONSTITUTING MAIN STREET.
