BILL NUMBER:S7826

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to
designating certain portions of the Lake Ontario State Parkway the
"U.S. Navy Seabee Parkway"

PURPOSE: This bill would designate a portion of the state highway
system in and around the town of Greece, county of Monroe as the "U.S.
Navy Seabee Parkway".

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1 amends the highway law by adding new section 344-c, which
designates certain portions of the Lake Ontario State Parkway as the
"U.S. Navy Seabee Parkway".

Section 2 requires the commissioner of transportation to install and
maintain adequate signage on the state highway as designated in
section 1. To avoid confusion and disruption in commerce the
designation of the highway system shall be ceremonial in nature.

Section 3 states that this act shall become effective immediately.

JUSTIFICATION: For more than 60 years the men and women of the Naval
Construction Forces or "Seabees" have lived their motto of "we build,
we fight". Founded shortly after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, the
Seabees served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation
building airstrips, bridges, roads, warehouses, hospitals, gasoline
storage tanks and houses. Since World War II the Seabees have fought
and built for freedom in Korea, Vietnam, Bosnia, Afghanistan and
Kuwait. Their efforts in wartime have provided crucial infrastructure
for all our armed forces, while their peace time labors have aided
thousands of communities across the globe. No matter how difficult or
daunting a construction project may be the Navy Seabees will be there
building and fighting because they can do!

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: None.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: None.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
