AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to security of  classroom
  culinary knives

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section  409-l
to read as follows:
  S  409-L.  SECURITY  OF  CLASSROOM CULINARY KNIVES. 1. FOR PURPOSES OF
THIS SECTION THE FOLLOWING TERMS  SHALL  HAVE  THE  MEANINGS  SET  FORTH
BELOW:
  (A)  "SCHOOL"  SHALL MEAN ANY PUBLIC OR PRIVATE SCHOOL DISTRICT, PARO-
CHIAL SCHOOL, BOARD OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES,  UNIVERSITY  OF
THE STATE OF NEW YORK OR CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK.
  (B)  "CULINARY  KNIVES" SHALL MEAN ANY KNIVES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO BE
USED IN FOOD PREPARATION.
  2. EVERY SCHOOL WHERE CULINARY KNIVES  ARE  USED  WITHIN  A  CLASSROOM
SHALL  ENSURE  THAT SUCH CULINARY KNIVES ARE LOCKED IN A SECURE LOCATION
WHEN THE USE OF SUCH CULINARY KNIVES  IS  NOT  UNDER  SUPERVISION  OF  A
TEACHER, INSTRUCTOR, OR OTHER ADULT OVERSEEING A CLASSROOM.
  S  2.  This  act shall take effect on the ninetieth day after it shall
have become a law.
