AN ACT to amend the judiciary  law,  in  relation  to  exempting  active
  volunteer firefighters from jury duty

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The judiciary law is amended by adding a new section 512 to
read as follows:
  S 512.  ACTIVE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY. 1.   UPON
CLAIMING  EXEMPTION  THEREFROM,  A  VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER, AS DEFINED IN
SECTION THREE OF THE  VOLUNTEER  FIREFIGHTERS'  BENEFIT  LAW,  SHALL  BE
EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY.
  2.  THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE COURTS SHALL PRESCRIBE A FORM TO BE
USED THEREFOR. ANY QUALIFIED PERSON MAY FILE SUCH FORM WITH  THE  APPRO-
PRIATE  COMMISSIONER  OF  JURORS  WHO SHALL THEREUPON EXEMPT SUCH PERSON
FROM JURY DUTY. SUCH EXEMPTION SHALL REMAIN VALID AS LONG AS SUCH PERSON
REMAINS A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER.
  S 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred twentieth day after
it shall have become a law; provided that the chief administrator of the
courts is authorized to promulgate any and all rules and regulations and
take any other measures necessary to implement this act on its effective
date on or before such date.
