BILL NUMBER:  S6472

 TITLE OF BILL :

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion
of the state highway system as the "Marine Lance Corporal James J.
Jackowski Memorial Highway"

 PURPOSE :

Designates a portion of the state highway system, in the town of
Lewisboro, county of Westchester, as the "Marine Lance Corporal James
J. Jackowski Memorial Highway."

 SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS :

Section one of the bill amends the highway law by adding a new section
344-e that designates all that portion of the state highway system
constituting state route thirty-five in the town of Lewisboro, county
of Westchester, beginning at the intersection of state route
thirty-five and state route one hundred twenty-four, and terminating
at the intersection of state route thirty-five and Ridgefield Avenue,
shall be designated and known as the "Marine Lance Corporal James J.
Jackowski Memorial Highway."

Section two states the commissioner of transportation shall provide
              

for the installation of appropriate signage, and that the designation
pursuant to section one of this act shall be of a ceremonial nature.

Section three contains the effective date.

 JUSTIFICATION :

Marine Lance Corporal James J. Jackowski, 20, was one of the 239
Marines tragically killed in the Beirut, Lebanon barracks bombings on
October 23, 1983. Corporal Jackowski enlisted in the Marines during
his senior year at John Jay High School, located in the
Katonah-Lewisboro School District.

Following his desired career path, Corporal Jackowski became a cook
within the Marines, a passion and skill he developed while in high
school. Through his talent of cooking and duties as a Marine, Corporal
Jackowski shared his fun-loving and compassionate nature with everyone
he came in contact with. He genuinely cared about the emotions and
well-being of others and showed this throughout his daily life.

New York State Route 35 runs directly past Corporal Jackowski's family
home while he attended high school, and at the time of his tragic
death. Dedicating this section of state highway will ensure that
Marine Lance Corporal James J. Jackowski's heroic sacrifice is honored
for all time.
