 AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the creation of a peer
   to peer mentoring program
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. Section 305 of the education law is amended by adding a new
 subdivision 56 to read as follows:
   56. THE COMMISSIONER IS AUTHORIZED AND DIRECTED TO REQUIRE ALL ELEMEN-
 TARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO CREATE PEER  TO  PEER  MENTORING  PROGRAMS
 RELATING  TO  THE IMPLICATIONS OF DRUG ABUSE. RESOURCES, INFORMATION AND
 COUNSELING RELATED TO DRUG AND SUBSTANCE USE MUST  BE  PROVIDED  TO  THE
 MENTORING PROGRAMS BY EACH SCHOOL. SUCH RESOURCES, INFORMATION AND COUN-
 SELING  MAY  BE PROVIDED BY OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS AND MUST BE AGE-APPRO-
 PRIATE FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN.
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
