 AN ACT to amend the general business law, in relation to requiring motor
   vehicle shops to give fair and legal estimates for car repairs

   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The general business law is amended by adding a new section
 399-hh to read as follows:
   § 399-HH. MOTOR VEHICLE REPAIR SHOPS; FAIR AND LEGAL ESTIMATE.  1. ALL
 MOTOR VEHICLE REPAIR SHOPS SHALL GIVE A FAIR AND LEGAL ESTIMATE FOR  ANY
 REPAIRS  NECESSARY  ON A MOTOR VEHICLE. SUCH ESTIMATE SHALL BE PROJECTED
 TO THE BEST OF SUCH MOTOR VEHICLE REPAIR SHOP'S EMPLOYEE'S  ABILITY  AND
 SHALL DELINEATE AND OUTLINE THE PRICES OF NECESSARY PARTS AND LABOR.
   2.  A  VIOLATION OF THE PROVISIONS OF THIS SECTION SHALL BE PUNISHABLE
 BY A CIVIL PENALTY OF NOT MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS RECOVERABLE IN
 AN ACTION BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL IN THE NAME OF THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE
 OR BY THE CORPORATION COUNSEL FOR ANY CITY OR BY THE APPROPRIATE  ATTOR-
 NEY  OF  ANY  OTHER  POLITICAL SUBDIVISION AS SHALL BE DESIGNATED BY THE
 GOVERNING BODY OF SUCH POLITICAL SUBDIVISION.
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
