 AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to increasing the  number
   of  supreme  court  justices  in  the third judicial district (Albany,
   Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties)

   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section  1.  Subdivision  3  of section 140-a of the judiciary law, as
 amended by chapter 711 of the laws  of  1978,  is  amended  to  read  as
 follows:
   3. Third district, [fifteen] SEVENTEEN;
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately; provided however that the
 additional justices of the supreme court, provided for by section one of
 this  act,  shall first be elected at the general election to be held in
 November 2017 and shall first take office January 1, 2018.
