Requires the municipal government of cities having a population of one million or more to provide one school crossing guard for each school building with an enrollment of under 500 kindergarten through eighth grade pupils and at least two crossing guards for school buildings with an enrollment of over 500 kindergarten through eighth grade pupils.

 AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to municipalities with  a
   population over one million providing crossing guards for schools
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new  section  3235
 to read as follows:
   §  3235.  MUNICIPALITIES  PROVIDING  CROSSING GUARDS AT ELEMENTARY AND
 MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT OF CITIES HAVING  A  POPULATION
 OF  ONE MILLION OR MORE SHALL PROVIDE AT LEAST ONE SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD
 FOR EACH SCHOOL BUILDING WITH A STUDENT ENROLLMENT  OF  LESS  THAN  FIVE
 HUNDRED KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE PUPILS AND AT LEAST TWO SCHOOL
 CROSSING  GUARDS  FOR EVERY SCHOOL BUILDING WITH A STUDENT ENROLLMENT OF
 FIVE HUNDRED KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH GRADE PUPILS OR MORE AS  DETER-
 MINED  BY  THE  LOCAL  SCHOOL  DISTRICT.  THE MUNICIPALITY MAY RE-ASSIGN
 SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS WITHIN ONE MILE OF A  SCHOOL  TO  ANOTHER  SCHOOL
 THAT  HAS  BEEN  DETERMINED  TO  BE IN GREATER NEED OF A SCHOOL CROSSING
 GUARD OR GUARDS.
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
