BILL NUMBER: S5162 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the labor law, in relation to authorizing the city of New York to implement a minimum wage SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1 amends subdivision 1 of section 652 of the labor law, as amended by section 1 of part P of chapter 57 of the laws of 2013, is amend and a new subdivision 1-a is added that will allow the city of New York to implement a minimum wage for the city of New York which shall be no less than the minimum wage currently set for the state. Section 2 sets forth an effective date of one hundred and eighty days after it shall have become law. JUSTIFICATION : While the State of New York has increased its minimum wage, the city of New York should be allowed to set its own minimum wage at a rate higher than the current state law. AVELLA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Labor AN ACT to amend the labor law, in relation to authorizing the city of New York to implement a minimum wage THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 652 of the labor law is amended by adding a new subdivision 1-a to read as follows: 1-A. THE CITY COUNCIL SHALL IMPLEMENT A MINIMUM WAGE FOR SOLELY THE CITY OF NEW YORK WHICH SHALL BE NO LESS THAN THE MINIMUM WAGE PURSUANT TO SUBPARAGRAPH (I) OF PARAGRAPH (A) OF SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION. § 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
