BILL NUMBER: S5528 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the election law, in relation to petitions for election to the party position of member of the county committee PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : If the candidate petitions for an election and if they clearly state their town or city on such a petition, they shall not be required to state their zip code as well. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1 when petitioning for election to the party position of member of the county committee, if the candidate has clearly provided their town or city, they need not also provide their zip code. Section 2 sets the effective date. JUSTIFICATION : Our democracy thrives when interested citizens participate as voters and as candidates. Many of our laws in New York State as it relates to running for office and party positions make it more difficult to gain

AVELLA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Elections AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to petitions for election to the party position of member of the county committee THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 6-132 of the election law is amended by adding a new subdivision 1-a to read as follows: 1-A. IN THE CASE OF A PETITION FOR ELECTION TO THE PARTY POSITION OF MEMBER OF THE COUNTY COMMITTEE, CANDIDATES SHALL NOT BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THEIR ZIP CODE, PROVIDED THAT THEY HAVE CLEARLY STATED THEIR TOWN OR CITY ON SUCH PETITION. § 2.
