BILL NUMBER: S5687 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the legislative law, in relation to imposing term limits for members of the assembly and senate of the state of New York PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : Sets a limit of three four-year terms that members of the legislature may serve in either the senate or the assembly. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : This bill would amend the legislative law by adding a new section Section 2a, which states members of the legislature shall not serve more than three four-year terms in either the senate or the assembly. This section also stipulates that in no event may a legislator serve more than twelve consecutive years in either the senate or assembly. JUSTIFICATION : The purpose of those elected to public office is to serve the public trust and represent the voice of their district. MARCHIONE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Investigations and Govern- ment Operations AN ACT to amend the legislative law, in relation to imposing term limits for members of the assembly and senate of the state of New York THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The legislative law is amended by adding a new section 2-a to read as follows: § 2-A. LEGISLATIVE TERM LIMITS. MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATURE SHALL NOT SERVE MORE THAN THREE FOUR-YEAR TERMS IN EITHER THE SENATE OR THE ASSEM- BLY. IN NO EVENT MAY A LEGISLATOR SERVE MORE THAN TWELVE CONSECUTIVE YEARS IN EITHER THE SENATE OR ASSEMBLY. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately; only terms commenced on or after such date shall be counted toward an individual's years of service.
