AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to requiring elementary
and secondary schools to close in the event the governor declares a
state of emergency related to the weather in any city having a popu-
lation of one million or more
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The executive law is amended by adding a new section 27-a
to read as follows:
§ 27-A. WEATHER RELATED STATE OF EMERGENCY. WHENEVER THE GOVERNOR, ON
HIS OR HER OWN INITIATIVE OR PURSUANT TO A REQUEST FROM THE MAYOR OF A
CITY HAVING A POPULATION OF ONE MILLION OR MORE, FINDS THAT A STATE OF
EMERGENCY EXISTS BECAUSE OF THE IMMINENT OR EXISTING WEATHER CONDITIONS
IN A CITY HAVING A POPULATION OF ONE MILLION OR MORE, HE OR SHE SHALL
DECLARE A WEATHER RELATED STATE OF EMERGENCY BY EXECUTIVE ORDER. UPON
SUCH A DECLARATION ALL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY
SCHOOLS IN SUCH CITY SHALL BE CLOSED AND REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL SUCH STATE
OF EMERGENCY IS TERMINATED.
§ 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
