BILL NUMBER: S3903 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting special agents of the veterans affairs office of the inspector general peace officer status PURPOSE : This bill would grant peace officer status to Special Agents of the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1. Adds a new subdivision 84 to section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law, granting Special Agents of the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General peace officer status. Section 2. Sets forth the effective date. JUSTIFICATION : Special Agents of the Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General investigate crimes committed against programs and operation of the Department of Veterans Affairs, including fraud, bribery, sale of contraband drugs and pharmaceuticals, theft, assaults involving VA employees and patients, among others. GALLIVAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Codes AN ACT to amend the criminal procedure law, in relation to granting special agents of the veterans affairs office of the inspector general peace officer status THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2.10 of the criminal procedure law is amended by adding a new subdivision 84 to read as follows: 84. SPECIAL AGENTS OF THE VETERANS AFFAIRS OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL, WHEN ACTING PURSUANT TO THEIR SPECIAL DUTIES IN MATTERS ARISING UNDER LAWS RELATING TO IMPROVING VETERAN'S LIVES BY BRINGING CRIMINALS WHO PREY UPON THEM TO JUSTICE; PROVIDED, HOWEVER, THAT NOTHING IN THIS SUBDIVISION SHALL BE DEEMED TO AUTHORIZE SUCH MEMBERS TO CARRY, POSSESS, REPAIR OR DISPOSE OF A FIREARM UNLESS THE APPROPRIATE LICENSE THEREFOR HAS BEEN ISSUED PURSUANT TO SECTION 400.00 OF THE PENAL LAW. § 2.
