  printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation

AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to  the  elimi-
  nation  of any fees associated with the distinctive license plates for
  purple heart recipients

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section  1.  Subdivision 3 of section 404-e of the vehicle and traffic
law, as amended by chapter 486 of the laws of 1996, is amended  to  read
as follows:
  3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this section shall be issued
in  the  same  manner as other number plates upon payment of the regular
registration fee prescribed by section four hundred one of this article,
provided, however, that no service charge  shall  be  charged  for  such
plate. FURTHERMORE, UPON THE ISSUANCE OF A DISTINCTIVE PLATE PURSUANT TO
THIS  SECTION,  SUCH  PURPLE  HEART  RECIPIENT  SHALL BE EXEMPT FROM THE
PAYMENT OF ANY FEES RELATING TO THE RENEWAL  THEREOF  AS  PRESCRIBED  BY
SECTION FOUR HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE.
  § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.

AN  ACT  to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to the elimi-
  nation of any fees associated with the distinctive license plates  for
  purple heart recipients

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 404-e of the vehicle  and  traffic
law,  as  amended by chapter 486 of the laws of 1996, is amended to read
as follows:
  3. A distinctive plate issued pursuant to this  section  TO  A  PURPLE
HEART  RECIPIENT  shall  be  [issued  in the same manner as other number
plates upon] EXEMPT FROM THE payment of  the  regular  registration  fee
prescribed  by  section  four  hundred  one  of this article, [provided,
however, that] AND no service charge shall be charged  for  such  plate.
FURTHERMORE,  UPON  THE ISSUANCE OF A DISTINCTIVE PLATE PURSUANT TO THIS
SECTION, SUCH PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT SHALL BE EXEMPT FROM THE PAYMENT OF
ANY FEES RELATING TO THE RENEWAL THEREOF AS PRESCRIBED BY  SECTION  FOUR
HUNDRED ONE OF THIS ARTICLE.
  § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
