BILL NUMBER: S6761 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the mental hygiene law, in relation to reviewing suicide prevention programs periodically PURPOSE OF THE BILL : This bill will establish a review of suicide prevention programs by the office of mental health. This will ensure that the individuals at risk of suicide are being met with the adequate and responsible care they need. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1 amends section 7.07 of the mental hygiene law by adding a new sub division (g) as follows: Subdivision (g) requires the office of mental health to review and recommend changes to suicide prevention programs, in consultation with the department of health. Section 7.07 of mental hygiene law is amended by adding a new subdivision (g) to read as follows: (G) THE OFFICE SHALL PERIODICALLY, IN CONSULTATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, REVIEW SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAMS ESTABLISHED BY THE OFFICE TO ENSURE THAT THE NEEDS OF INDIVIDUALS AT RISK OF SUICIDE ARE BEING MET AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE SUCH PROGRAMS, WHICH SHALL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO: (1) CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY; AND (2) BEST PRACTICES FOR SCREENING AND INTERVENTIONS AIMED AT ADDRESSING SUICIDE RISK FACTORS FOR MINORITY GROUPS, INCLUDING MEMBERSHIP IN RACIAL AND ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS, SEXUAL AND GENDER MINORITY GROUPS. § 2.
