BILL NUMBER: S6839 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the highway law in relation to establishing the New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis Memorial Bridge PURPOSE : To memorialize and honor New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1: Amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-h. Section 2: States that the designation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be ceremonial and not official. Section 3: Sets forth the effective date. JUSTIFICATION : This bill is being introduced to honor the memory of Trooper Joel R. Davis, a New York State Police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life in the line of duty while responding to a call for help, knowing that he faced an armed assailant. RITCHIE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the highway law in relation to establishing the New York State Trooper Joel R. Davis Memorial Bridge THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-h to read as follows: § 344-H. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "NEW YORK STATE TROOPER JOEL R. DAVIS MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE BRIDGE ON STATE ROUTE 26 (MILL STREET) WHICH CROSSES THE INDIAN RIVER IN THE TOWN OF THERESA, COUNTY OF JEFFERSON, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "NEW YORK STATE TROOPER JOEL R. DAVIS MEMORIAL BRIDGE". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD13326-01-7
