 AN ACT to amend the highway law, the transportation law, the  canal  law
   and  the  parks, recreation and historic preservation law, in relation
   to a prohibition on renaming highways, bridges,  waterways  and  parks
   after politicians

   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section  332  to
 read as follows:
   §  332. RENAMING OF HIGHWAYS, ROUTES AND THRUWAYS; PROHIBITION.  ON OR
 AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION, NO HIGHWAYS, STATE  ROUTES  OR
 THRUWAYS IN THIS STATE SHALL BE NAMED AFTER AN INDIVIDUAL THAT SERVES OR
 SERVED  AS  AN  ELECTED OFFICIAL, WHETHER AT THE FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL
 LEVEL.
   § 2. The transportation law is amended by adding a new section  23  to
 read as follows:
   § 23. RENAMING OF BRIDGES; PROHIBITION. ON OR AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE
 OF  THIS  SECTION, NO BRIDGE IN THIS STATE SHALL BE NAMED AFTER AN INDI-
 VIDUAL THAT SERVES OR SERVED AS AN  ELECTED  OFFICIAL,  WHETHER  AT  THE
 FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LEVEL.
   §  3.  The canal law is amended by adding a new section 135 to read as
 follows:
   § 135. RENAMING OF CANALS AND WATERWAYS; PROHIBITION. ON OR AFTER  THE
 EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS SECTION, NO CANAL OR WATERWAY IN THIS STATE SHALL
 BE  NAMED  AFTER AN INDIVIDUAL THAT SERVES OR SERVED AS AN ELECTED OFFI-
 CIAL, WHETHER AT THE FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LEVEL.
   § 4. The parks, recreation and historic preservation law is amended by
 adding a new section 29.17 to read as follows:
   § 29.17 RENAMING OF PARKS; PROHIBITION. ON OR AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE
 OF THIS SECTION, NO PARK IN THIS STATE SHALL BE NAMED AFTER AN  INDIVID-
 UAL  THAT SERVES OR SERVED AS AN ELECTED OFFICIAL, WHETHER AT THE FEDER-
 AL, STATE OR LOCAL LEVEL.
   § 5. This act shall take effect immediately.
