 AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to  requiring  completion
   of  a training program on the treatment of those with intellectual and
   developmental disabilities and chronic  illness  for  certain  medical
   professionals

   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 6524-a
 to read as follows:
   § 6524-A. MANDATORY TRAINING ON THE TREATMENT OF THOSE WITH  INTELLEC-
 TUAL  AND  DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND CHRONIC ILLNESS. 1. ALL PHYSI-
 CIANS, IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN HIS OR HER LICENSE IN GOOD  STANDING,  SHALL
 COMPLETE  A  BIENNIAL  TRAINING  PROGRAM  ON THE TREATMENT OF THOSE WITH
 INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND CHRONIC ILLNESS.
   2. SUCH TRAINING PROGRAM SHALL BE DEVELOPED AND  ADMINISTERED  BY  THE
 DEPARTMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.
   3.  SUCH  TRAINING  PROGRAM  SHALL INCLUDE, BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO, THE
 FOLLOWING:
   A. DIDACTIC CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING,  AND  ONLINE
 LEARNING, TOTALING NOT LESS THAN SIX HOURS; AND
   B.  BEST  PRACTICES  FOR  THE  TREATMENT AND CARE FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE
 INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND CHRONIC
 ILLNESS, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS.
   4. THE DEPARTMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF  HEALTH  SHALL
 PERIODICALLY EVALUATE SUCH TRAINING PROGRAM FOR RELEVANCE AND PRACTICAL-
 ITY.
   5.  THE  DEPARTMENT  SHALL  PREPARE, PUBLISH AND DISSEMINATE A LIST OF
 AVAILABLE TRAINING PROGRAMS PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION; PROVIDED, HOWEVER,
 THAT THE LIST SHALL BE UPDATED ANNUALLY. THE LIST SHALL BE PUBLISHED  IN
 A  LOCATION THAT IS ACCESSIBLE TO PERSONS REQUIRED TO ATTEND SUCH TRAIN-
 ING PROGRAM.
