TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the county law and the executive law,

PURPOSE:
This bill establishes another method to keep track of veterans' suicides
rates.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS:
Section 1 amends the County Law to add a new subdivision to direct a
coroner, coroner's physician or medical examiner to report, through the
use of a one page form, to the Division of Veterans' Affairs, any death
which appears to be a suicide by a person who is believed to be a veter-

AN ACT to amend the county law and the executive law, in relation to the
reporting of a veteran's suicide
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. Section 677 of the county law is amended by adding a new
subdivision 10 to read as follows:
10. THE CORONER, CORONER'S PHYSICIAN OR MEDICAL EXAMINER SHALL PROMPT-
LY REPORT TO THE DIVISION OF VETERANS' AFFAIRS, IN A ONE PAGE FORM
DEVELOPED AND PROVIDED BY SUCH DIVISION, ANY DEATH WHICH APPEARS TO BE A
SUICIDE BY A PERSON WHO, TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CORONER, CORONER'S
PHYSICIAN OR MEDICAL EXAMINER, IS A VETERAN.
§ 2. Section 353 of the executive law is amended by adding a new
subdivision 24 to read as follows:
24. TO DEVELOP A ONE PAGE FORM BY WHICH A CORONER, CORONER'S PHYSICIAN
OR MEDICAL EXAMINER SHALL FILL OUT TO REPORT TO THE DIVISION ANY DEATH
WHICH APPEARS TO BE A SUICIDE BY A PERSON WHO, TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE
CORONER, CORONER'S PHYSICIAN OR MEDICAL EXAMINER, IS A VETERAN. THIS
FORM SHALL PROVIDE THE ADDRESS TO WHICH THE FORM IS TO BE MAILED OR
SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY.
§ 3. Within 60 days of the effective date of this act, the division of
veterans' affairs shall establish and implement the procedures and forms
necessary for the implementation of this act.
§ 4. This act shall take effect immediately.
