BILL NUMBER: S6213 SPONSOR: JORDAN TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law in relation to desig- nating a portion of the state highway system as the "Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge" SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends section 344-h of the highway law to change the location of the Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge, which was authorized by Chapter 282 of the Laws of 2018. Section 2 sets forth the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: This bill amends a chapter of the laws of 2018 that named a bridge in Columbia County after Roger J. Mazal. This bill simply changes the bridge to be renamed from a bridge crossing Kline Kill to the bridge in downtown Valatie crossing Kinderhook Creek.

JORDAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 344-h of the highway law, as added by chapter 282 of the laws of 2018, is amended to read as follows: § 344-h. Portion of the state highway system to be designated as the "Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge". The portion of state route two hundred three consisting of a bridge crossing [Kline Kill connecting the town of Kinderhook, county of Columbia, and the town of Chatham] KINDERHOOK CREEK IN THE VILLAGE OF VALATIE, county of Columbia shall be designated and known as the "Roger J. Mazal Memorial Bridge". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of the ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD11721-01-9

This bill simply changes the bridge to be renamed from a bridge crossing Kline Kill to the bridge in downtown Valatie crossing Kinderhook Creek. As mentioned in the sponsor's memo of the original chapter, Roger J. Mazal, a native of Valatie, was killed in action on March 7th 1969 in the Pleiku province in Vietnam. Mazal was a staple in the local communi- ty who gave his life for the people back home he loved so dearly. This
