BILL NUMBER: S6944 SPONSOR: BAILEY TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the correction law, in relation to significant program- matic accomplishment for limited credit time allowances for certain inmates PURPOSE: This is a chapter amendment that makes changes to provisions of L.2019, c.723. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: This legislation amends the underlying chapter to require that incarcer- ated students utilize accredited institutions in order to receive the Limited Credit Time Allowance for earning a post-secondary degree.

BAILEY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to significant program- matic accomplishment for limited credit time allowances for certain inmates THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subparagraph (ii) of paragraph (c) of subdivision 1 of section 803-b of the correction law, as amended by a chapter of the laws of 2019, amending the correction law relating to significant programmat- ic accomplishment for limited credit time allowances for certain inmates, as proposed in legislative bill numbers S.1379 and A.882, is amended to read as follows: (ii) obtains an [associate's] ASSOCIATE degree, bachelor's degree [or], master's degree OR DOCTORAL DEGREE BY COMPLETING A REGISTERED PROGRAM FROM A NEW YORK STATE DEGREE-GRANTING INSTITUTION, OR A PROGRAM OFFERED BY AN OUT-OF-STATE INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION AUTHORIZED TO OFFER POST-SECONDARY DISTANCE EDUCATION IN NEW YORK STATE PURSUANT TO APPLICABLE RULES AND REGULATIONS PROMULGATED BY THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK; or § 2. This act shall take effect on the same date and in the same manner as a chapter of the laws of 2019, amending the correction law relating to significant programmatic accomplishment for limited credit time allowances for certain inmates, as proposed in legislative bill numbers S.1379 and A.882, takes effect.
