2021-A7030 (ACTIVE) - Summary
Increases the terms of office for the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of East Hampton from two to four years; provides for the staggering of such terms of office; further provides that at the biennial election to be held in said town in two thousand twenty-three, the five candidates receiving the largest number of votes shall be entitled to hold office for a term of four years and the remaining four successful candidates shall hold office for a term of two years.

THIELE -- read once and referred to the Committee on Local Governments AN ACT to amend chapter 1001 of the laws of 1966, confirming the author- ity and proprietary rights of the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of East Hampton, in relation to increasing the term of office from two years to four years and providing for the staggering of such terms of office THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Section 2 of chapter 1001 of the laws of 1966, confirming the authority and proprietary rights of the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of East Hampton, as amended by chapter 378 of the laws of 1975, is amended to read as follows: § 2. The electors of the town of East Hampton are hereby authorized and empowered to elect by ballot from their number at the biennial town election to be held in said town in [nineteen hundred seventy-five] TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-THREE and biennially thereafter, in the same manner as other town officers are elected, nine freeholders as trustees, who shall continue to be known as the Trustees of the Freeholders and Commonalty of the Town of East Hampton. They shall hold office for a term of [two] FOUR years, PROVIDED THAT AT THE BIENNIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD IN SAID TOWN IN TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-THREE, FIVE TRUSTEES SHALL HOLD OFFICE FOR A TERM OF FOUR YEARS AND FOUR TRUSTEES SHALL HOLD OFFICE FOR A TERM OF TWO YEARS. AT THE BIENNIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD IN SAID TOWN IN TWO THOUSAND TWENTY-THREE, THE FIVE CANDIDATES RECEIVING THE LARGEST NUMBER OF VOTES SHALL BE ENTITLED TO HOLD OFFICE FOR A TERM OF FOUR YEARS. THE REMAINING FOUR SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES SHALL HOLD OFFICE FOR A TERM OF TWO YEARS. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted.
