TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Harvey Weisenberg Parkway"

 
PURPOSE:

This bill relates to designating the portion of Loop Parkway between the
intersection of Lido Boulevard and the intersection of Meadowbrook State
Parkway as the "Harvey Weisenberg Parkway."

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section one of the bill amends the highway law by adding a new section
to designate a portion of the state highway system in Nassau county as
the "Harvey Weisenberg Parkway."

Section two of the bill states the commissioner of transportation shall
provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the

state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act.

Section three of the bill provides the effective date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

Former Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg served in the New York State Assem-
bly for 25 years. Prior to his time in the legislature he worked in his
home city of Long Beach as a police officer, President of the the Police
Benevolent Association, and City Councilman. He went on to become a
special education teacher and elementary school principal for over two
decades and when he joined the assembly one of his top priorities was to
transform the lives of people living with special needs on Long Island
and throughout all of New York. Importantly, he worked closely with
various organizations that serve the physically and developmentally
disabled. He also was an instrumental part of the Assembly leadership,
first as chair of the Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse and then
later as Deputy Majority Whip and Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore.

Assemblyman Weisenberg has been a tireless advocate for his community
and his passion for others should be remembered and emulated. This is
why his family and friends wish to honor his service by designating a
portion of the state highway system that leads to the Long Beach Barrier
Island as the "Harvey Weisenberg Parkway."

 
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:

This legislation would effectively have no fiscal impact on state and
local governments. The New York State Department of Transportation would
be required to develop signage to mark the bridge.

 
EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately.

 AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
   the state highway system as the "Harvey Weisenberg Parkway"
 
   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-n to
 read as follows:
   §  344-N.  PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE
 "HARVEY WEISENBERG PARKWAY". ALL  THAT  PORTION  OF  THE  STATE  HIGHWAY
 SYSTEM  CONSTITUTING  LOOP PARKWAY BEGINNING AT THE INTERSECTION OF LIDO
 BOULEVARD IN THE TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD, COUNTY OF NASSAU AND THE LOOP  PARK-
 WAY, CONTINUING EAST ON SUCH PARKWAY AND TERMINATING AT THE INTERSECTION
 OF  SUCH  PARKWAY AND THE MEADOWBROOK STATE PARKWAY IN THE TOWN OF HEMP-
 STEAD, COUNTY OF NASSAU, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN  AS  THE  "HARVEY
 WEISENBERG PARKWAY".
   §  2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state  highway  system
 as  designated  pursuant  to  section one of this act. However, to avoid
 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce,  the  desig-
 nation  called  for  pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of
 ceremonial nature and the official name of such  highway  shall  not  be
 changed as a result of this act.
   § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
