AN ACT to amend the judiciary law, in relation to exempting senior citi-
zens from jury duty
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The judiciary law is amended by adding a new section 511 to
read as follows:
§ 511. SENIOR CITIZENS EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY. 1. UPON CLAIMING
EXEMPTION THEREFROM, A PROSPECTIVE JUROR WHO IS SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF
AGE OR OLDER, SHALL BE EXEMPT FROM JURY DUTY.
2. THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE COURTS SHALL PRESCRIBE A FORM TO BE
USED THEREFOR. ANY QUALIFIED PERSON MAY FILE SUCH FORM WITH THE APPRO-
PRIATE COMMISSIONER OF JURORS WHO SHALL THEREUPON EXEMPT SUCH PERSON
FROM JURY DUTY. SUCH EXEMPTION SHALL REMAIN VALID UNLESS SUCH EXEMPTED
PERSON REQUESTS TO BE REINSTATED AS A PROSPECTIVE JUROR IN A FORM AND
MANNER AS PROMULGATED BY THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATOR OF THE COURTS.
§ 2. This act shall take effect on the one hundred eightieth day after
it shall have become a law. Effective immediately, the addition, amend-
ment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the implemen-
tation of this act on its effective date are authorized to be made and
completed on or before such effective date.
