TITLE OF BILL:

An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
the state highway system as the "Trooper Theodore A. Dobbs Memorial
Bridge"

 
PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL:

To designate a portion of the state highway system in the Town of North
Hempstead after fallen State Trooper Theodore A. Dobbs.

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section one amends the highway law by adding a new section 334-o to
designate the portion of the state highway system as "Trooper Theodore
A. Dobbs Memorial Bridge". This portion of the highway constitutes the
Old Country Road overpass at the Meadowbrook state parkway in the Town
of North Hempstead, in the county of Nassau.

Section two allows the Commissioner of Transportation to provide for the
installation and maintenance of the signage for the bridge renaming. The
renaming of this bridge shall be ceremonial in nature, and therefore the
official name of such bridge will not be changed as a result of this
act.

Section three states the effect date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

Trooper Theodore A. Dobbs served with the New York' State Police and was
a member of Troop K, assigned to the Long island Parkway Detail.  While
on patrol, he was struck on his motorcycle by a truck that had passed
through a stop sign on the Jericho Turnpike in Mineola. He passed away
due to complications from his injuries on September 29, 1924. He was
only twenty four years old at the time of his passing, and the renaming
will commemorate Trooper Dobbs and leave an honorable tribute to his
service.

 AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of

   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-o to
 read as follows:
   § 344-O. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED  AS  THE
 "TROOPER  THEODORE  A.  DOBBS  MEMORIAL BRIDGE". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE
 STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM CONSTITUTING THE OLD COUNTRY ROAD OVERPASS  AT  THE
 MEADOWBROOK  STATE  PARKWAY  IN  THE  TOWN OF NORTH HEMPSTEAD, COUNTY OF
 NASSAU, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "TROOPER THEODORE A.  DOBBS
 MEMORIAL BRIDGE".
   §  2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal-
 lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state  highway  system
 as  designated  pursuant  to  section one of this act. However, to avoid
 confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce,  the  desig-
 nation  called  for  pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of
 ceremonial nature and the official name of  such  bridge  shall  not  be
 changed as a result of this act.
   § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
