AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to instruction in food
and agriculture
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 804-e
to read as follows:
§ 804-E. AGRICULTURE CURRICULUM OR INSTRUCTION. 1. THE COMMISSIONER,
IN CONSULTATION WITH THE COMMISSIONER OF AGRICULTURE AND MARKETS, SHALL
ESTABLISH CURRICULUM OR INSTRUCTION FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS REGARDING THE
PRACTICE OF FARMING AND AGRICULTURE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO HORTI-
CULTURE, AGRICULTURAL LITERACY, FOOD PRODUCTION, FOOD MANUFACTURING, AND
AGRIBUSINESS, AMONG OTHER TOPICS. IN DETERMINING SUCH CURRICULUM, THE
COMMISSIONER SHALL INCLUDE A HANDS-ON INSTRUCTIONAL COMPONENT THAT IS
AGE APPROPRIATE AND DEMONSTRATES THE MATERIAL VALUE OF NEW YORK'S FARM-
ING INDUSTRY.
2. SCHOOLS MAY INCLUDE THE ABOVE MATERIALS AS A COMPONENT OF ITS
SCIENCE CURRICULUM OR ANY OTHER WAY THE SCHOOL DEEMS APPROPRIATE.
§ 2. This act shall take effect the first of July next succeeding the
date on which it shall have become a law, and shall apply to school
years commencing on or after such date. Effective immediately, the addi-
tion, amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for
the implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized to
be made and completed on or before such effective date.
