2025-S10665 (ACTIVE) - Summary

Enacts the "Social Worker Initiative for Faster Testing (SWIFT) act"; provides that with respect to the examination requirement for licensure as a master social worker, an applicant pursuing a master's of social work degree who is enrolled in the final semester of a program registered by the department of education or an educational program accredited or in candidacy for accreditation by the council on social work education shall be eligible to take the master's level examination.

 AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to enacting  the  "Social
   Worker Initiative for Faster Testing (SWIFT) act"
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

   Section 1. This act shall be known and may be  cited  as  the  "Social
 Worker Initiative for Faster Testing (SWIFT) act".
   §  2.  Paragraph (d) of subdivision 1 of section 7704 of the education
 law, as added by chapter 420 of the laws of 2002, is amended to read  as
 follows:
   (d)  Examination: pass an examination satisfactory to the board and in
 accordance with the commissioner's  regulations.    NOTWITHSTANDING  THE
 FOREGOING, AN APPLICANT PURSUING A MASTER'S OF SOCIAL WORK DEGREE WHO IS
 ENROLLED IN THE FINAL SEMESTER OF A PROGRAM REGISTERED BY THE DEPARTMENT
 OR  AN  EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ACCREDITED OR IN CANDIDACY FOR ACCREDITATION
 BY THE COUNCIL ON SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION SHALL BE ELIGIBLE  TO  TAKE  THE
 MASTER'S  LEVEL  EXAMINATION;  PROVIDED,  HOWEVER,  THAT PASSAGE OF SUCH
 EXAMINATION SHALL NOT AUTHORIZE THE APPLICANT TO PRACTICE SOCIAL WORK OR
 ENTITLE THE APPLICANT TO LICENSURE  UNTIL  ALL  OTHER  REQUIREMENTS  FOR
 LICENSURE  UNDER  THIS  ARTICLE, INCLUDING GRADUATION FROM SUCH PROGRAM,
 HAVE BEEN FULFILLED;
   § 3. This act shall take effect one year after it shall have become  a
 law. Effective immediately, the addition, amendment and/or repeal of any
 rule  or  regulation necessary for the implementation of this act on its
 effective date are authorized to be made and completed on or before such
 date.
