 Introduced  by  Sens.  BAILEY, RIVERA -- read twice and ordered printed,
   and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Education
 
 AN ACT authorizing  and  directing  the  commissioner  of  education  to
   conduct  a  study  regarding  ecological  literacy  and healthy living
   curriculum in schools, and to provide recommendations
   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The commissioner of education is authorized and directed to
 conduct a study regarding ecological literacy and healthy living curric-
 ulum  within  the  state.  For purposes of this act, the term "qualified
 institution" shall mean every public and  private  school  in  New  York
 state that instructs any students in grades kindergarten through twelve.
 Such  study  shall  focus  on the availability of such curriculum at all
 qualified institutions, and shall include but not be limited to:
   1. a description of all offered ecological literacy and healthy living
 related classes;
   2. the academic year ecological literacy and healthy  living  instruc-
 tion  becomes available at each qualifying institution and a description
 of its specific form;
   3. the existence of  any  specific  ecological  literacy  and  healthy
 living  program  at  each  qualifying  institution and what such program
 includes; and
   4. all ecological literacy and healthy living  extracurricular  activ-
 ities offered.
   § 2. A report of the findings of such study and recommendations of the
 commissioner of education shall be delivered to the governor, the tempo-
 rary  president of the senate, the speaker of the assembly, the minority
 leader of the senate and the minority leader of the assembly within  one
 year of the effective date of this act.
   § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
