BILL NUMBER: S6382 SPONSOR: RYAN C TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the executive law, in relation to equipping certain emergency response vehicles with appropriate communication devices for deaf individuals PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To ensure that all emergency response vehicles are equipped with commu- nication devices for the deaf. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of the bill amends the Executive Law by adding Section 563. Section 563 states that all emergency response vehicles (ambulances, police cars, fire vehicles, and emergency ambulance service vehicles) are required to have an appropriate communication device on board, to assist in communicating with the deaf.

RYAN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Disabilities AN ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to equipping certain emergency response vehicles with appropriate communication devices for deaf individuals THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The executive law is amended by adding a new section 563 to read as follows: § 563. EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLES; COMMUNICATION DEVICES. EVERY POLICE VEHICLE, FIRE VEHICLE, AMBULANCE, OR EMERGENCY AMBULANCE SERVICE VEHICLE, AS SUCH TERMS ARE DEFINED IN ARTICLE ONE OF THE VEHICLE AND TRAFFIC LAW, SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH APPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION DEVICES TO FACILITATE REAL-TIME COMMUNICATION WITH DEAF INDIVIDUALS. § 2. This act shall take effect six months after it shall have become a law. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD05045-01-5
