TITLE OF BILL:

An act directing the metropolitan transportation authority and the New
York city transit authority to rename the 190th street subway station on
the IND Eighth Avenue line to the 190th street - Fort Tryon Park
station; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration
thereof

 
PURPOSE:

To officially rename the 190th Street subway station to include "Fort
Tryon Park," in recognition of the park's cultural, historical, and
recreational significance, and to improve wayfinding and access for both
residents and visitors.

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

  Section  1  directs the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) to rename
the 190th street subway  station  the  "190th  street-Fort  Tryon  Park"

subway  station and to ensure all signs, maps, and other items issued by
the MTA are updated accordingly to reflect this change.

  Section 2 is the effective date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

The 190th Street station serves as the primary subway  access  point  to
Fort  Tryon  Park,  one  of  New  York City's most prominent and beloved
parks. Fort Tryon Park is visited by hundreds  of  thousands  of  people
each year.

Despite  this,  there  is no reference to the park in the current subway
station name, making navigation confusing for visitors  and  undermining
the  visibility  of  a  major  recreational asset. It allows visitors to
select the proper station without relying on maps that don't  take  into
consideration the topography of the local area.

Adding "Fort Tryon Park" to the station name will:clarity and navigation
for  tourists  and  non-local visitors seeking access to the park; Boost
civic pride by recognizing a major public green space; Align with naming
conventions used in other parts of the  subway  system,  where  stations
frequently  incorporate  the  names of nearby parks (e.g., "42nd Street-
Bryant Park station").

   printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation
 
 AN ACT directing the metropolitan transportation authority and  the  New
   York  city transit authority to rename the 190th street subway station
   on the IND Eighth Avenue line to the 190th street -  Fort  Tryon  Park
   station;  and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expira-
   tion thereof
 
   THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section  1.  Upon  a  determination by the metropolitan transportation
 authority or the New York city transit authority that  sufficient  funds
 have  been  committed to it specifically for such purpose, the metropol-
 itan transportation authority, the public benefit corporation created by
 section 1263 of the public authorities law, and the New York city trans-
 it authority, the public benefit corporation created by section 1201  of
 the  public authorities law, shall use such specifically committed funds
 to rename the 190th Street subway station on the IND Eighth Avenue  line
 of  the  New  York  city  subway  to  the 190th Street - Fort Tryon Park
 station.  The metropolitan transportation authority  shall  ensure  that
 all  signs and any other items issued by the metropolitan transportation
 authority are updated to accurately reflect the new name of the station.
   § 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall  expire  and  be
 deemed  repealed  after  the  signs  and  any other items are accurately
 updated.
