TITLE OF BILL:

An act directing the metropolitan transportation authority and the New
York city transit authority to rename the Jamaica Center- Parsons/ Arch-
er subway station to the Jamaica Center- Parsons/ Archer York College
Jamaica station; and provides for the repeal of such provisions upon
expiration thereof

 
PURPOSE:

To rename the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer subway station the Jamaica
Center-Parsons/Archer York College subway station

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1 directs MTA to rename_Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer subway
station the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer York College subway station.

Section 2 is the effective date to include a repeal clause once the
              

renaming of all needed signage takes place.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

Renaming the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer station to include York
College would align the transit system with the reality of how the
station is used and understood by riders while advancing equity,
wayfinding clarity, and institutional recognition. York College is a
major senior college of the City University of New York, serving more
than 7,000 students, faculty, and staff, and functioning as a critical
educational, cultural, and economic anchor in Southeast Queens. The
campus is located within close walking distance of the station, which is
one of the primary access points for students commuting from across the
city via the E, J, and Z lines and multiple bus routes. Across New York
City, stations are routinely named or co-named for nearby universities
and civic institutions-such as 161 St-Yankee Stadium, Columbia Universi-
ty-116th Street, and Brooklyn College-Flatbush Avenue-because such
naming improves navigability, reduces rider confusion, and reflects
significant trip generators.  Adding York College to the station name
would enhance wayfinding for students, visitors, and prospective enrol-
lees, reinforce the visibility of a public institution serving a histor-
ically underserved community, and signal public investment in higher
education access. The change would be a low-cost, high-impact improve-
ment that strengthens neighborhood identity, supports economic activity,
and ensures that the transit map accurately reflects one of Southeast
Queens' most important public assets.

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately and shall expire and be deemed
repealed after the signs and any other items are accurately updated.
The chief executive officer of the metropolitan transportation authority
or president of the New York city transit authority shall notify the
legislative bill drafting commission upon the completion of such updates
in order that the commission may maintain an accurate and timely effec-
tive data base of the official text of the laws of the state of New York
in furtherance of effectuating the provisions of section 44 of the
legislative law and section 70-b of the public officers law.
