 Introduced  by  Sen.  CLEARE -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
   printed to be committed to the Committee on New York City Education
 
 AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to  establishing  a  free
   lifeguard training program in high schools in a city with a population
   of one million or more
 
   THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
 BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
 
   Section 1. The education law is amended by adding a new section 927 to
 read as follows:
   § 927. HIGH SCHOOL LIFEGUARD TRAINING PROGRAM.  THE  DEPARTMENT  SHALL
 ESTABLISH  AND  ADMINISTER  A  FREE  LIFEGUARD  TRAINING PROGRAM IN HIGH
 SCHOOLS OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS LOCATED IN A CITY WITH A POPULATION  OF  ONE
 MILLION  OR  MORE.  SUCH PROGRAM SHALL BE OPERATED YEAR ROUND, UNDER THE
 DIRECTION AND ADVISEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT. PARTICIPATING STUDENTS SHALL
 HAVE PREEXISTING EXPERIENCE IN SWIMMING AND WATER SAFETY, AS  DETERMINED
 BY  THE  SCHOOL  DISTRICT.  WITHIN  AMOUNTS  APPROPRIATED  THEREFOR, THE
 DEPARTMENT SHALL COVER ALL FEES AND COSTS OF A STATE-APPROVED  LIFEGUARD
 CERTIFICATION  EXAM  FOR  ANY  STUDENT  UPON  COMPLETION OF THE TRAINING
 PROGRAM ESTABLISHED PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION.
   § 2. This act shall take effect on the first of July  next  succeeding
 the date on which it shall have become a law.
