LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of David Lloyd, a notable
tenor, recording artist, father, educator, impresario and mentor

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, David Lloyd died on Friday, February 8, 2013, at the age of
92; and
WHEREAS, David Lloyd distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, David Lloyd was a graduate of Minneapolis College of Music
and Curtis Institute of Music; his father, David Jenkins, founded
Eclipse Lighting Manufacturing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his moth-
er, Louise Lupien Jenkins, was an organist for the 1st Church of Christ
Scientist, in Minneapolis; and
WHEREAS, A young David Lloyd was a World War II naval aviator, and
flew with baseball great Ted Williams and actor Robert Stack; a Koussev-
itzky protege at Tanglewood with Goldovsky, Caldwell and Bernstein,
Koussevitzky chose David for the 1948 Beethoven 9th at Tanglewood; he
was Benjamin Britten's choice to play the title role in Albert Herring
for the 1949 U.S. premiere, and was a leading tenor with the New York
City Opera from 1950 to 1958, and in 1965 and 1976; and
WHEREAS, Famous in the United States, David Lloyd was booked for
appearances with a half dozen major orchestras in the 1959-1960 season,
and toured trans-continentally with the Boston Opera's production of
Offenbach's Voyage to the Moon; in Europe, he was well-known at the
festivals in Prades, Athens, Glyndebourne and Edinburgh which is a small
portion of the list of engagements that could be credited to his name;
and
WHEREAS, Having been identified with numerous recording labels, David
Lloyd's recording of the Messiah with Bernstein and the New York Phil-
harmonic is the most popular recording of this oratorio; he also made
numerous appearances in televised opera with NBC and Omnibus working
with Leonard Bernstein and Kirk Browning; and
WHEREAS, As an educator, David Lloyd held faculty and administrative
positions with the State University of Iowa and West Virginia University
in vocal instruction, Hunter College CCNY as director of the Hunter
Opera Workshop, Krannert Center University of Illinois as director of
opera, and at Juilliard School of Music as director of the American
Opera Center; and
WHEREAS, Perhaps David Lloyd's most enduring contribution to opera in
America was as general director of the Lake George Opera Festival from
1962 to 1980, where he promoted opera in English and the development of
young singer/actors; he started the first Apprentice Artist Program
along with his colleague John Crosby in Santa Fe, New Mexico, produced
world premiers of American works, and began Contemporary American Opera
Studio (CAOS), featuring new American Operas with Lake George artists
and composers, while fostering the careers of hundreds of young perform-
ers; and
WHEREAS, Following his retirement from Juilliard, David Lloyd served
as director of the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation, continuing his
commitment to developing and funding careers of young artists; in addi-
tion, he served on the board of the American Guild of Musical Artists as
a lifetime member; and

WHEREAS, David Lloyd's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his first wife of 54 years, violinist Maria
Lloyd, his son, composer Timothy Cameron Lloyd, and his brother and
sister, William Jenkins and Amara, David Lloyd is survived by his wife,
Barbara Wilson Lloyd, his son and daughter, David Thomas and Theresa
Treadway Lloyd, his grandson, David Van Lloyd, as well as numerous niec-
es and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, David Lloyd leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of David Lloyd, a notable tenor, recording artist,
father, educator, impresario and mentor; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of David Lloyd.
