U.S. Sen Schumer, Sen Squadron Secure $12 Million For Lower East Side Pier 42 Park

Squadron, Schumer Urge Continued Focus on Community Priorities, Path Forward for WTC Performing Arts Center

NEW YORK – U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer and State Senator Daniel Squadron, who jointly urged the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) to fund Pier 42 park on the Lower East Side, and establish a path forward for the World Trade Center Performing Arts Center, released the following statement after the LMDC vote securing $12 million for Pier 42, $7 million from new LMDC funds, and $5 million from City LMDC funds:

“This gives all of New York 12 million more reasons to celebrate. We’ve worked together since 2010 to make a park at Pier 42 a reality. In 2012 we secured $16 million. And we have seen successful interim use the last three summers. This funding is a big step in our long push for a Harbor Park -- a Central Park for the center of our city, and an emerald ribbon around Manhattan, which will be so important for the local community and the whole borough. We thank the LMDC, Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, and the community, including Community Board 3, for their partnership, and look forward to continued progress towards a world-class park at Pier 42.

We also thank the LMDC for funding a number of other important community priorities. But, the LMDC’s work is not yet done. It must work towards additional outstanding community priorities, including a path forward for the long-promised Word Trade Center Performing Arts Center, and have a role in ensuring storm resiliency throughout lower Manhattan."
