Senator Montgomery Urges Residents to Preserve Mitchell Lama Co-ops

Senator Montgomery joined her colleagues to urge the Board of 21 Saint James, a Mitchell Lama co-op, to vote no to privatization. She stressed the fact that Mitchell Lama buildings have been heavily subsidized to provide affordable housing for a whole generation of working class families. She urged them to place their decision in the greater context of the affordability and homelessness crises faced by our city and to allow a new generation to benefit from the same protections they received for so many years. 

“To lose 21 Saint James Place to privatization would be a major step backwards for our community and for our efforts to preserve and create affordable housing. Mitchell-Lama provided permanently affordable housing for a whole generation of working class families and in this case, the pride and influence that comes with being a stakeholder in a thriving community as well. We have a responsibility to ensure affordability for the next generation as well, especially in an environment where the cost of housing has risen exponentially with no end in sight," said Senator Montgomery."
