Highlights of March 2019

On March 12, the Senate passed Senator Roxanne J. Persaud's legislation, the Domestic Violence Survivor's Justice Act.

  1. On March 1, Senator Persaud attended Kings County D.A. Eric Gonzalez's Legislative Luncheon. She and other elected officials from Brooklyn were briefed on what the D.A.'s Office has accomplished since last year and their plans going forward which they called their "Justice 2020 Action Plan." The Office pledged to keep the neighborhoods of Brooklyn safe and strengthen the trust of the community with fair, equal justice for each and every individual.
  2. On March 5, Senator Persaud, Senator Kevin Parker and Senator Shelley B. Mayer were surprised with a birthday cake for their birthdays, which all fall around the beginning of the month. Happy birthday to each of them!
  3. On March 8, Senator Persaud visited Brooklyn Scholars Charter School in East New York and read the books "The Grumpy Bird" and "The Magic Fan" to the second grade students.
  4. Senator Persaud attended P.S. 312's World Read Aloud Day on March 8 where she talked with students about her career.
  5. Senator Persaud visited the Vandalia Senior Center on March 8 and donated yarn for The Crochet Seniors so they may continue knitting scarfs and blankets for children in need. They also surprised the Senator with a birthday cake and celebration.
  6. On March 8, Senator Persaud met with Bishop Clarence Williams, Lady Williams and grant writer Samuel Manning at Southern Baptist Church to discuss the nonprofit Southern Community Development Corporation's after-school STEM program for youth.
  7. Senator Persaud discussed access to grants for small businesses, improvements to infrastructure and standards for minority and women-owned businesses at the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce's legislative visit to Albany on March 12.
  8. On March 12, the Senate passed Senator Persaud's legislation, Bill S1077 — the Domestic Violence Survivor's Justice Act, which reduces prison sentences for survivors of domestic violence convicted of a crime if the defendant was largely influenced by their abuse at the time of the offense. It also allows allows judges to order them to community-based programs instead of incarceration and gives eligible victims currently imprisoned the opportunity to apply for resentencing. 
  9. Senator Persaud will be working on the New York State Legislature's Joint Budget Sub-Commitee for Human Services and Labor. She is looking forward to reconciling the differences between the proposals set forth by the Senate and the Assembly and shaping a budget that includes proper funding for human services programs across the state.
