Police officers across NYS initiate millions of traffic stops every year. As a former State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I understand the natural apprehension many drivers have when pulled over. This guide is intended to alleviate anxiety and help ensure interactions between law enforcement officers and drivers are civil, respectful and safe for all involved.
It was created in collaboration with police officers, attorneys, State Legislators, and officials from the Department of Motor Vehicles. It outlines the rights and responsibilities of drivers and offers best practices and procedures to follow during a traffic stop. Drivers, police officers and taxpayers all benefit from everyone being more informed.
I hope you will find this guide helpful and will share it with others. As always, please drive responsibly.
