February 11, 2025

On February 11, Senator Serrano cosponsored Arts Day 2025 in Albany alongside Assembly Member Ron Kim, who serves as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts, and Sports Development. The event brought together arts advocates and leaders from various regions of New York State, all emphasizing the critical role the arts play in enriching communities and driving economic growth.
Discussions centered on three key areas:
1. Arts as an Economic Engine: Speakers highlighted how arts investments boost local economies, create jobs, and attract tourism, which yields significant returns in community development.
2. Diversity and Cultural Tourism: Advocates emphasized showcasing New York’s diverse cultural heritage through the arts, which enriches the community and draws global visitors with successful case studies of cultural events enhancing local tourism.
3. Arts in Education: The need for integrating arts education in schools was stressed, along with support for adult arts programs, showcasing their benefits for individual creativity and cultural vitality.
As the New York State legislature worked on shaping the SFY 2025-26 budget, Arts Day served as a platform for advocating for the arts, as well as a crucial reminder of the vital impact that a substantial investment in the arts and culture sector has on the state’s economy, community cohesion, and educational enrichment.
