Call for Tax Credit Bill to Support the Geothermal Industry and Jobs in New York

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Some New York State Senators, geothermal installers, and other supporters, are calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign a tax credit bill to support the geothermal industry and jobs in New York.

The group came together today at a building on Russell Street in Rochester. That building is being retrofitted with geothermal heating and cooling.

The tax credit they are advocating for would give home and business owners a 25 percent tax incentive, up to $5,000, if they install geothermal utilities.

"Climate destruction is just going to keep happening and keep getting worse until we stop burning fossil fuels," said Bill Nowak, Executive Director of the New York Geothermal Energy Organization. "So this is a crucial part in New York State. 30 percent of the greenhouse gases come from heating buildings. Only 20 percent from generating electricity."

There is a mandate in New York State to reduce greenhouse gases by 40 percent by the year 2030.
