Garden City residents Christine Scheppa and Colleen Ciullo were recently presented with the New York State Commendation Award, a distinct honor given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through service to the community. Ms. Scheppa and Mrs. Ciullo were among 20 exceptional residents recognized by State Senator Kevin Thomas in a special ceremony at Nassau Community College on Friday, December 13.

Christine Scheppa, a registered nurse and Garden City resident, was recognized for her tireless advocacy on behalf of those suffering from traumatic brain injury and their caregivers. Ms. Scheppa knows first-hand the emotional and financial difficulties that caregivers face–her son Vincent suffered a brain injury in 2016, and has since required 24/7 care. Ms. Scheppa has used her experience to push for a change in state law that would help qualified family members provide nursing services to their loved ones and be reimbursed at a nursing rate. The Vincent Scheppa Bill, named for her son, passed the Senate last year, and is currently awaiting review by the Health Committee in the Assembly. Full passage of the bill would assist thousands of caregivers across New York State.

Colleen Ciullo was recognized for her dedication to bettering her community through civic engagement. She currently serves as vice president of legislation for the Garden City PTA, where she plays a key role in keeping the community informed of legislation and measures that impact the school community. Mrs. Ciullo’s work empowers Garden City residents to be active participants in the decision process and affect positive change in their community and beyond.

“I am proud to recognize Christine Scheppa and Colleen Ciullo for their dedication to helping others and serving the community,” said Senator Kevin Thomas. “They have made a measurable difference in the lives of others, and for that, I was honored to present them with the New York State Commendation Award.”
