People gathered at vigil in Syracuse to remember storming of U.S. Capitol

Syracuse, N.Y. — People gathered in downtown Syracuse Thursday evening to observe the anniversary of the Jan. 6 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

About 50 people stood with signs and LED candles at the James M. Hanley Federal Building around 4:30 p.m.

Speakers pushed for the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood.

State Sen, John Mannion, a Democrat from Geddes, also spoke, recounting how he felt a year ago, watching events unfold on television.

“I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “This was not the country that I grew up in....It so abhorrent that I thought about my children and the impact that this event would have on their future.”

Mannion connected the attempt to overturn the election results with his own loss in 2018. Mannion that year narrowly lost a state Senate race to Republican Bob Antonacci.

“Losing is much more important than winning an election that is fraudulent, if I can use that word, and that is an election that would have been stolen had I won,” he said.
