Electeds declare intention to vote against Coney Island casino plan

BOROUGH HALL AND CONEY ISLAND — TWO KEY ELECTED OFFICIALS HAVE STATED PUBLICLY THEIR PLANS TO VOTE AGAINST the proposed ‘The Coney’ casino, ahead of the upcoming Community Advisory Committee vote. The project, which the City Council approved on June 30 and which has backing from Thor Equities, would build a 1.3-million-square-foot casino and hotel in the heart of Coney Island’s amusement district that supporters said would bring in thousands of jobs.

State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-23), whose district includes Coney Island, and who serves on the committee, also said she will vote against it, after talks with the casino applicants, review of the licensing materials, and weighing the project’s impact on public safety, transportation and Coney Island’s history and needs. “I have concluded that The Coney’s application would not be suitable for the proposed location,” Scarcella-Spanton said.
