Two GLOW-region representatives are calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign legislation that would increase the state’s tax credit for volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel.

The legislation, S.6233-A/A.6790-A, has passed both the Senate and Assembly with proud bipartisan support.

State Sen. Pam Helming, R-Canandaigua, whose district includes Livingston County, and Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey, R-Geneseo, whose district includes Livingston and Wyoming counties, said the legislation would help recruit and retain volunteer firefighters and ambulance personnel.

“When an emergency call comes in, volunteers may be sitting down to dinner, they may be at work, may be at one of their kids’ school events, may be sleeping in the middle of the night. But whatever activity they are engaged in, they stop and they respond because someone is in need,” Helming said.

“People want to know when they dial 911, they will get that response,” she said. “We need to do more ... to take meaningful action to recruit and retain.”

That opportunity, Helming said, comes in the form of Hochul signing the legislation into law.

“This is our opportunity to make it easier for volunteers to continue to answer the call.”
