Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced the New York State Senate today passed a bill he cosponsored that would give real property tax relief on properties owned by persons with disabilities on limited incomes.

The bill (S.5734-A) would authorize local governments to increase the maximum income eligibility limit under the Disabled Real Property Tax Exemption program from $24,000 to $26,000, and in one thousand dollar increments annually until 2009, when the income requirement will be $29,000.

"This bill will give people struggling with disabilities a much needed break on their property taxes," said Senator Larkin. "Not only do they face difficult obstacles every day because of their disabilities, but these individuals are also coping with the strain of having extremely limited incomes. This proposal could mean the difference between someone staying in their home or not."

The bill will be sent to the Governor for his consideration.
