“I am urging Governor Paterson to immediately declare emergency disaster areas for Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.
The loss of life, and destruction of property and infrastructure have created dire circumstances.
Our local emergency responders have been doing a yeoman’s job, but we need significant help.
People have sustained personal loss, and businesses and municipal infrastructure have been severely damaged. Water, sewer and road systems will need substantial repairs. Assessing and fixing the damage will be a huge undertaking. Providing relief to families whose homes have been affected is a priority.
I also urge people to use caution by not driving through flooded roads, approaching fast-moving waterways and being wary of downed power lines.”
