State Senator Rubén Díaz to Senators Smith and Sampson:
“Let Governor Paterson’s Race to the Top Legislation
Come to the Floor for a Vote”
January 19, 2010 State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz today called on Senate President Malcolm Smith and Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson to allow Governor David Paterson’s “Race to the Top” bill to come to the Senate floor for a vote.
“The entire Senate should vote this bill up or down, just like we did for the Marriage Equality bill,” stated Senator Díaz.
Race to the Top is the federal initiative that would provide approximately $700 million in education aid to New York State. New York State’s application for this funding is due in Washington, D.C. by Tuesday afternoon, January 19, 2010.
“Surely Senators Smith and Sampson must believe that our children’s education is as important an issue as Marriage Equality,” commented Senator Díaz. “That is why the Governor’s bill should be voted on. Let the Senate decide yes or no, not the leadership,” concluded Senator Díaz.
