NEW YORK -- Today, State Senator Daniel Squadron released the following statement after the Department of Education announced that it will not close P.S. 137 on the Lower East Side. In a November 7 letter to Chancellor Walcott, Senator Squadron urged the DOE to keep the school open:
DOE's decision to keep P.S. 137 open is a victory and an opportunity for the Lower East Side community. Last month, I urged the DOE to work with us to find an alternative to closure in the belief that an alternative would be less disruptive to teachers, parents, and students alike. I look forward to working with the school and the community to make sure P.S. 137 provides Lower East Side kids with the best possible education.
